A farmer's cooperative society is one in which farmers (men and women) unite voluntarily to meet their common cultural and social aspirations. The group collectively acts on the marketing and processing of farm products, purchase and or produce farm tools, implements, and equipment.
Collective action is the core value of the farm's cooperative group. This is because, in a cooperative society, social relationships are developed, motivating farmers to achieve goals that they cannot achieve alone.
Usually, the major aim of the farm's cooperative society is to increase the member's production as well as income by being able to provide member farmers with agricultural inputs (seeds, fertilizers, pest control instruments, etc.,), output (market), information, and most importantly, finance.
Funding is a great Agricultural challenge in this area. Your help is needed to reinforce the farmer's cooperative society in Puerto Rico.
What exactly is the Problem?
Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico is no new news nor is how it sent a lot of Puerto Rico farmers back to the beginning. But years before the hurricane, Puerto Rico was known for her excellence in exporting farm produce. Agriculture was Puerto Rico's main economic sector and she's known to produce sugar, coffee, mangos, pineapples, bananas, plantains and oranges to name a few.
All of a sudden, things began to take a dramatic turn. Many blamed the government of Puerto Rico for abandoning agriculture for manufacturing. This changed the territory from an exporting territory to an importing territory. Published research result shows how Puerto Rico imports about 85% of its food despite having the land, resources, and climate to produce more. Puerto Rico food imports caused the decline in the number of farms. Importing food has made the agricultural sector unattractive especially to the younger generation.
The younger generation now considers the agricultural sector the poor man's field and shifted their focus, like the government, to the manufacturing sector. The majority of the younger generation cited the lack of farm mechanization as the driving force behind the change in focus. If agriculture is tedious due to the lack of modern farm tools and machines, then importing is better and that's what is happening already.
Hurricane Maria came and made the matter even worse.
The solution to the problems is really difficult to pursue. The problem ranges from political to resources, even human issues, that is, labor issues are there to overcome. One way that has been identified in which the farmers can get to work in solving the problem is for the farmers to cooperate amidst themselves. And, that is happening already. The farmers have gathered together to form a cooperative society in the hope of finding a lasting solution to their problem but there is little to what they can do. Many of these farmers are already of age. Few amidst them are of youthful age. Of course, it's common of youth to not stay on with work they don't find lucrative or commensurate with the hard work required to make a farm productive.
Our team is out there with the farmers, speaking to them and providing them with the needed information which will boost their production rate. But when there is inadequate funding everything we say falls into the theory category. Funding makes it practical. We aim to make purchases of farm tools, machinery, and resources in the name of Puerto Rico's cooperative society. When the purchase is done, farmers will come to rent the farm equipment, make use of it, and then return as soon as possible. This way, farmers will find farming easier.
There is a lot of work to do which is why we need you to support the vision. Whatever amount you commit to this cause can literally save farms and indirectly put food on someone's table. The farmers are ready, willing and able to get the farms working again but they need our help.
Profit or Non-Profit
This project is not intended in any way to be for personal profiting. The goal is fully set on the farms and how to revive agriculture in Puerto Rico.
Of course, some money will definitely be made based on the plans and strategy on the ground as regarding the giving out of any equipment we purchase. However, the money will be properly accounted for and will be used for the maintenance and or repair of the equipment and to purchase more of such equipment so that there can be more than enough to go around for the number of farmers.
We intend to make sure whatever you contribute today has a long-lasting lifespan as the plan is to make every penny reproduce itself over and over again. This will ensure we do not keep coming to you to donate for the same things over and over. This means your contribution today has a generational potential and a chance to outlive you.
The aspiration is to replicate this strategy in various regions of Puerto Rico. However, we do not aim to raise all the funds needed for all the regions at once. The goal is to start and then spread gradually into other regions. Our target is to use the funds from these pioneering facilities to expand and grow into other satellite stations.
